Day 1: You think you're lucky?

So on my first day I set off happily towards Savona on a seemingly endless skate when after 5-6 hours and about 55km I reached my first destination. I became overwhelmed with happiness and emotion because of the sheer beauty of the Italian coastline and how succesfully this section had gone. I then decided to make a change to my route for several reasons, firstly the state of my shoes and my feet which were pretty much falling apart. Secondly because the coastline has a lot of cycle paths which enables me to progress faster rather than fearing getting hit by a car or truck every half a second. Lastly the sight of the mountains was enough to stop any sane person from venturing towards them (even though you could argue that im not excatly sane). After skating for around 10 hours my legs and mainly shoulders were screaming so loud telling me to stop that I decided to try something new: hitchhiking, a very useful approach to getting places fast if you are lucky. Thankfully I am fairly lucky and hitched a ride in about 30mins from Finale Ligure to Imperia, where I tried to find a nice spot to sleep. Apparently my luck had run dry for the day so I ended up sleeping in an uncomfortable place for cars to pull over on, cars kept whizzing past and to top it off as I fell asleep a train came flying past on my other side!
Besides the downsides my first day was probably the best I could have hoped for!

A little note: Some people may claim hitchhiking is cheating but due to the state of my shoes (which made it pretty much the same as skating barefoot) I think I can let it slip.
